For the record:

My xscreensaver works again if I launch it like this:

$ LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH=/usr/X11R6-4.2.1/lib/modules/dri
xscreensaver&

(I knew I kept my old 4.2.1 installation lying around
for a reason... ;-)
