Tracking such bug is hard. I tried to find why 9800pro lockup but so
far only things i know is that fglrx is doing somethings we don't.
Anyway, the way radeon memory map are setup is bogus and may
be related to the lockup you face. Thus you may want to try patchs
from Benjamin :

You shouldn't experience immediate lockup with these patchs.
You may also want to follow bugs related to these issues look
on bugzilla.freedesktop.org.

Btw does xorg lockup if you disable dri ? (check that xserver can't
load radeon module)
