I posted in reply to this stating that I had a similar problem, but the attached logfile was a tad too large for this list. Anyway, I solved my problem - If you are accidentally using a mobo with a via kt400 chipset, try upgrading to the latest kernel. 2.4.20 won't suffice, I compiled myself a 2.4.21-pre4 and now dri apparently works.
