Games using Sierra's audblast.drv (including Freddy
Pharkas -- and, according to the forums, several other
of Sierra's games) simply hiss when they should be
playing sound clips. Music works fine. Upgrading to the
current version of audblast.drv (downloadable from
Sierra's site) stops speech and other samples, though
not voice, from working at all. Observed against the
debian 0.58 package on Linux with ALSA as the backend
sound driver implementation.

This also happens with DosBox 0.60 and windows.
