And that I also have TERM set to linux. So, what is the difference? Easy - I am -ON- the console. Those of you who SSH in probably do need to have TERM=vt100 (and may I suggest a change to /etc/profile or /etc/bashrc to set this up for you automatically), but DON'T change the TERM setting by default - otherwise you will mess up those of us who use the actual console. So, my recommendation would be to change either /etc/profile or /etc/bashrc to see whether this person is coming in on a SSH connection and if so - then set the TERM environmental to vt100.
