Hello, I googled on H/W detection and discovered Kloopix, a CD Boot Linux created by Mr Kloop which he has named after himself. It uses Kudzu libraries, this will save me from having to learn the C language at this late date. It took a little digging to find the sources for his product. http://www.knopper.net/download/knoppix/ PDF Slides on Kloopix: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/knoppix-slides-ifa2001.pdf From the Usenix paper of 2000: hwsetup - a selfmadetool that uses the kudzu-library [4] - detects devices, loads all necessary driver modules for known hardware, sets up symbolic links in /dev and writes configura-tion parameters and options to the corresponding files in /etc/sysconfig/ on the ramdisk. Parameters that cannot be auto-detected (frequency ranges of oldmonitors, desired keyboard layout, language) are assumed with reasonable defaults. A single X-Windowsession is started if the graphics hardware has been identified correctly. Default is truecolor in a resolution of1024x786 pixels if possible, or 800x600/640x480 at 8- bit if the graphics adapter cannot handle higher resolu-tions or color depths. If detected, the accelerated XFree (3.3) drivers are used with specific options depending onthe detected graphics adapter. ===== John van Vlaanderen ############################################# # CXN, Inc.
