Hello, I'm trying to get the gnome-cygwin project running. So far, everything seems to be okay, expect that I can't get past this: $ /opt/gnome2/bin/gnome-session.exe winProcEstablishConnection - Hello winInitClipboard () winClipboardProc - Hello DetectUnicodeSupport - Windows NT/2000/XP winClipboardProc - DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0 winProcEstablishConnection - winInitClipboard returned. winClipboardProc - XOpenDisplay () returned and successfully opened the display. winProcSetSelectionOwner - Clipboard not yet started, aborting. winProcSetSelectionOwner - Clipboard not yet started, aborting. Failed to run gconf-sanity-check-2: Failed to execute child process "/opt/gnome2 /libexec/gconf-sanity-check-2" (No such file or directory) _IceTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.ICE-unix should be set to root SESSION_MANAGER=local/APD808:/tmp/.ICE-unix/1268 I've tried deleting the lock files as suggested and I've read every thing there is to read at sf.net including old e-mails and forums. Funny thing is, gnome-wm works. Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is? Jeremy -- Registered Linux User #346571 |

Hi, I wanted to install cygnome (1.4), and did it directly though cygwin setup. I have no experience in this, so all I did was get the packages and installed them directly though setup. Now to run it, I call startgnome. It opens a XWindow, then I see a beautiful picture and it starts to load different desktop components like sawfish etc. Finally it gives the hints window. But after I exit it, I get nothing more and an hourglass sign shows up (and persists forever). I don't get the gnome desktop or anything more. I am not sure if I am supposed to install any of Steven's patches. Can anyone guide me as to what to do. I don't want to mess around too much because I was able to get kde to work, however it is awfully slow and eats up too many resources, I was hoping gnome would be smoother. Thanks |

Hi, all key point (if you're not patient enough): - The co-existence of the some packages (such as gtk, ORBit) in this project and in cygwin net release could cause a lot of compatibility problems - There's no need any longer to keep this project - I'm considering freezing this project. Recently, I got some issue report such as "Can't find gdk_threads_lock in cyggdk DLL" "cyggdk_pixbuf-2.0-0.dll error" "Gnome2 cyglinc-1.dll missing" etc. Most of these problems are caused by the fact that you installed some base Gnome2 packages from cygwin net release and other stuff from our project. Our packages are based on Gnome 2.4, and because of short of hands, we couldn't keep these packages up-to-date. And with Gerrit P. Haase's and Yaakov Selkowitz's efforts, Gnome2 packages are getting into cygwin net release. Surely, their work are based on the recent releases, i.e. starting from Gnome 2.6, and some of they have been updated to Gnome 2.8. For example, in Gnome 2.4, linc is a standalone package, thus we have cyglinc-1.dll in our project, and it is used by some other packages. But in Gnome 2.6, the source code of linc is included in ORBit, and linc is no longer a standalone library. Now cygwin net release got latest release of ORBit included (with cygwin's setup.exe, you'll upgrade to that version automatically). If now you want to use our gnome-session, you know, you're doomed to encounter the problem such as "cyglinc-1.dll missing". And there're a lot problems like this. But I think putting Gnome2 packages into cygwin net release is in right direction, as it would attact more people to get into this porting work, which would improve the patches. And when these patches getting into upstream release, perhaps cygwin would become an official platform that Gnome would support, just like that kde would do. Thus I think there is no need to maintain this project (If there's some, that must be that s the progress that Gnome2 packages getting into cygwin net release is too slow, that some of you are not patient enough to wait, thus you want to use our gnome-desktop on new glib/gtk/ORBit packages from cygwin net release, which is not easy:-( ) Another reason is that, even some of you think there's worthiness for this project, I don't have enough time to do maintain about 60 packages. The patches done on Gnome 2.4 are far from stable (GConf would cause application hangs, the UI would hang there even if the application quitted, and so on, and so on) OK, now I would freeze this project. The setup.ini would be removed.ini, i.e. it won't be available for cygwin setup.exe any longer. But you can download binary packages manually. Sorry for the inconvenience brought to you. But when I startx , I get a win32 popup window with: The procedure entry point bonobo_activation_register_active_server_ext could not be located in the dynamic link library cygbonobo-activation-4.dll. I look on the web for any notes on this, but didn't find any. Anyone have any pointers as what to do???? Thanks Jim |

Hi, I've uploaded the cygwin port eog-2.4.1. Eog or the Eye of Gnome is a graphics viewer for GNOME which uses the gdk-pixbuf library. It can deal with large images, and zoom and scroll with constant memory usage. The goal is a standard graphics viewer for future releases of Gnome. EXIF information support not enabled in this Cygwin port, as we haven't got libexif ported to Cygwin. Hi, I've uploaded gedit-2.4.1 for test. Someone asked for it. gedit is a text editor which supports most standard editor features, extending this basic functionality with other features not usually found in simple text editors. gedit is a graphical application which supports editing multiple text files in one window (known sometimes as tabs or MDI). Hi, I've just started to use cygnome2. I have a gtk+ 2.0 base application that I want to port. First of all, let me say thanks for the great work. I do have a problem to report though. I did my install of cygnome2 using the cygwin setup program. I selected two sites, a normal cygwin mirror, and the cygnome2 install site. In addition to the defaults, I chose to install the general development packages, as well as gtk+-2.0 development packages. The install seemed to proceed smoothly enough, but if I try to run a gtk+ application, e.g. gtk-demo.exe, I get an "Entry Point Not Found" dialog with the message: "The procedure entry poing g_unsetenv could not be located in the dynamic link library cygglib-2.0-0.dll" It seems to me that the problem is that glib-1.4 is gettting installed but the application really wants glib-2.4 (where g_unsetenv first appeared). However, if I use setup to install glib-2.4 it installs the wrong version of pango (and I get a similar error message). I worked around the problem by downloading the glib-2.x package and forcably installing it with gnome2-pkgmgr.sh. However, anytime I use setup to install something else, it re-installs glib-1.4 and I have to do the 2.x install by hand again. -- Buck |
