Do you want to log into an X desktop or just have it running in the background to launch a single X-app from a console? =20 I use the XMing X-Server HYPERLINK "http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Xming"http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Xming = (which is a self-contained version of the Cygwin-X server) and launch it from = WinXP using XLanuch (included in XMing) or X-Connect HYPERLINK "http://www.c3d-vr.com/xconnect/"http://www.c3d-vr.com/xconnect/. =20 =20 I have CoLinux (v7.1 dev snapshot) running Gentoo as a service in the background. If I want to access the (text) console, I just run the FLTK console. If I want to access the X desktop (KDE), I simply run = X-Connect which detects the XDMCP session running and is a simple 1-button click = to run the XMing server and immediately get a X-kdm login. The X server = quits after I log out of the desktop (at least on my system). =20 =20 To get a single X app running, I typically use XLaunch or a simple DOS = batch file (mainly because I don't want to mess with my X-Connect settings as = they are for getting the desktop to display). I then run the x-app from the = FLTK console. I also have the following DOS batch file to run the server. SET DISPLAY=3D127.0.0.1:0.0 start Xming -lesspointer -rootless =96multiwindow -ac -clipboard =20 David Leffler Administrator Harrison Hills Baptist Church www.harrisonhills.org=20 =20 -----Original Message----- From: col...@li... But I was meaning to ask - the main reason I'm doing this instead of just sticking Cygwin/X in my startup folder is that I couldn't figure out a way to start it without also opening a terminal window. (Of course, when it's a service the terminal output gets thrown away, which is what I want in this case.) Is there any other way to start the X server without a terminal window? =20 Joe =20 =20 ------------------------------------------------------- SF.Net email is sponsored by: Tame your development challenges with Apache's Geronimo App Server. = Download it for free - -and be entered to win a 42" plasma tv or your very own Sony(tm)PSP.
