Playing around with this further, it seems that the problem is that in 0.7.1 there is no support for cobd beyond 4. IOW, if I change which devices are specified as cobd5 and cobd6, then whatever devices are called that stop showing up, even if the file worked just fine as cobd3 or 4. Anything I can do at this point - beyond try to remember how to program in = C?
