Hey Subodh, The problem with Debian (well, its not really a problem, and it can occur with a lot of distributions, not just Debian) is that the packages installed on the image aren't going to be configured properly for every situation out there. You have to do a lot of post-installation configuation that will set up the Debian image for your particular setup at home or at work. Things that need to be looked at/reviewed are: 1. Your network configuration. Often, the network design of these debian images are very simplistic. You probably have to tweak this to match your bridged or TAP network accordingly. The default for the backports image is a TAP setup. 2. The network resolving config files. Also part of the above, the config files for the network resolution (/etc/resolv.conf) is defaulted to a server that probably most home networks can't reach. So, trying to update apt-get will most likely fail. 3. Apt-get itself is using mirrors that might not be reachable from your home network. You should always choose mirrors that reflect the closest physical network connectivity (US East coast servers if you're in the east coast, etc). 4. Since the image itself is pretty old, the packages installed on the system are pretty old. If you don't get the above steps fixed, often you'll be working with really old software that might or might not work (since Debian is pretty stable, as thats what the stable image is based on, the software works pretty well, but there are a few examples of software packages that slip into stable that are well.. not quite stable). Anyways, your example of dhcp3-server not working is quite possibly one of those examples. Once you get all the above fixed and it STILL doesn't work, there might be other issues, but these are the big 4 that I can think of right now.
