jlucene seems to rely on garbage collection there, so callers are free
to assume that both the original and the rewritten version are
available after rewrite(). So if we want to base the clucene version
on that, reference counting is a must. However, I do wonder if the
existing code can be easily changed to allow the rewrite() methods to
delete the original query when creating a new one.
