I wouldn't say it's a "100% desired" behaviour, but it's expected. If you look at <http://checkgmail.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/checkgmail/checkgmail?revision=47&view=markup#l157> you'll see that, for kind-of-encryption purposes, checkgmail stores your password with an uname-based encryption, so it's expected to be broken after a kernel upgrade...

I think you could address this by adding some parameters to the uname command in that line to prevent showing the kernel version, if you really want to avoid this situation, but remember it will give you a weaker encryption...
