In alpha7 I modified the preprocessor which broke the mayaascii module 
and unfortunately I only noticed that after the release. Sorry. 
(meanwhile I have added a unit test for this so it should not happen again)
Can you upgrade to the latest svn version? It's fixed in there. (It 
might be enough to just grab mayaascii.py and simplecpp.py and replace 
those files in your installation)
