well, I was able to get semantic and semantic-db to save cache files in =
a directory outside of my source tree.

However, I still have problems getting the sort of information I want =
out of the tools.

For a brief time, I was able to have the current function and its =
arguments summarized in the echo area (in color even) for C and C++ =
files. I also used to have semantic speedbar analysis update =
automatically if the cursor stopped in one place for a while.  For some =
reason, these things are no longer working.  The only clue I've got is =
this, somewhat cryptic, error from the recent messages buffer:

itimer "itimer-0" signaled: (error "Invalid converter character )")

any hints as to what that could mean?

Your problem is unfamiliar to me, but I don't use XEmacs either.

Semanticdb will not save any cache files if it cannot write to the
directory.  Some visual inspection of the code indicates that the
save directory variable value needs to end with a / based.  Do you
have one of those?
