Great work Giuseppe! The MSDN Service is down right now but I use GetVersionEx which returns: dwPlatformId: VER_PLATFORM_WIN32_WINDOWS or VER_PLATFORM_WIN32_NT which should be enough but there is also dwMajorVersion and dwMinorVersion which will give you the exact windows version should you want it. The similar code that I have written has been tested on win98 with no adverse effects although it obviously does not lock device...
