This is something that I too find somewaht clunky. There are many things I don't like about ISIS/Draw, but the ease with which one can add atoms not carbon is is good. Personally, it would be most intuitive for me as a user to click on the "A" button and then wherever I clicked on the diagram would then allow me to add whatever i typed on teh keyboard.
