#1 What is meant by "existing sane backend installation"

Step 1 in the README file is:

"1. Extract the contents into an existing SANE backend
installation."

Can you tell me what this might mean, or how I might
find out what folder that might be on a Fedora Core 2
(64 bit) platform? Do I need to spend hours tracking
down what SANE is and learning about that before I can
install this?

If you don't know what that means, it may not be for you.
Your distro probably contains SANE, but for this driver to
work, you would need to donwload the SANE backend sources,
and compile them on your own.
Note that the current SANE backend is much newer than this
code here, and just extracting the contents into an existing
installation isn't quite enough anymore. In other words,
there are compile errors that you'd have to fix. I have just
done that, and I am going to upload the diff file. I haven't
tested it yet, but it at least compiles.
