Initial Comment:
Hey guys,
I installed BRL CAD from the generic binaries as follows:
Downloaded the file
gunzip brlcad-7.2.4_linux_ia64.tar.gz
tar -xvf brlcad-7.2.4_linux_ia64.tar
sudo mv usr/brlcad /usr/.

But how do I start it now?

MGED is not at all like a box from which you can start all the brl
applications.  BRL-CAD is sort of like "X11" .. lots of libraries,
applications, command line tools, and more.  MGED is just one of the
applications, though it has a GUI and is probably closer towards what you
were expecting.

I didn't say "go to /usr/brlcad/bin" .. Just type that whole line as the
command:

/usr/brlcad/bin/mged

You would have had to set up your PATH or have a better understand the
unix command line for what you were attempting to work.  If the whole line
from above doesn't work, you may have a sub-dir installation in which case
it'll be something like /usr/brlcad/rel-X.Y.Z/bin/mged where you replace
XYZ with the version number.

Note that 7.2.4 doesn't sound right or is supremely old.  The latest
release is 7.16.10

You're probably looking for:

/usr/brlcad/bin/mged

BRL-CAD is a suite of more than 400 tools and utilities.  There are lots
of docs, both as manual pages (in /usr/brlcad/man) and on the website:

/usr/brlcad/bin/brlman brlcad

That will get you started, the website goes into much more useful depth.
