Apparently, the reason why this flag is set is that the configure script matches the mpicxx compiler name with *cxx* (Compaq compiler) and not with *g++*|*c++* (GNU compiler). Perhaps aliasing the compiler name to mpic++ or simply using a non-MPI compiler will help.
