Does this ring > any bells with anyone out there? Yes, you most likely have an anti-virus software package such as Sophros running that is modifying st_mtime or st_ctime while "visiting" the files. Most these packages have a way to reset the times so that they remain unchanged after inspection. In the case of Sopros, you need to specify "--no-reset-atime" (yes, that is *no* reset ...).
