yes! you must shut down the remote database before the backup though. either that or you must create a different directory and use that database's tools to do a dump and then backup the dump. do you have rsyncd on the remote system? if so, that is an ideal way to back you data up. you can use the pre_dump and post_dump commands to start/stop the database OR to initiate the dump. hopefully you have sshd installed on the database machine and ca= n exchange ssh-keys.
