Now, for the ugly. I stupidly assumed that getting an ide frame for my spare drive and unmounting / remounting would be workable from a swap perspective. From what I've read, it will work only if I'm willing to power off the machine to swap drives. Yuck. After some googling around, it looks like ide hot swap won't even be properly invented until kernels 2.7 or 2.9. My backup server is running on a 2.4.20 kernel. What kind of hardware (usb maybe?, some kind of add-on firewire card?) will allow a drive to be added and removed on a 2.4 kernel? Will it suck for speed?
