Dowloaded and installed first the 32 bit exe file then the 64 bit exe file on Windows 8.1. Installation and uninstallation was smoth but sadly the program seems to crash at startup and gives no error message or anything.

Areca works for me on 8.1. It does not start if there is no Java Runtime Environment. Try installing Java runtime first

Hm, okay maybe I was unclear. The installation program work fine and does not complain but nothing works. In my humble opinion, if Java needs to be manually installed maybe the installation program could hint at that? (In the best of worlds the installation program would also install Java but maybe that is asking too much) As things are now I spent a few minutes trying to get your software working but the total lack of error messages quickly made me move on. Sadly...

I have 64 bit Java 8.1 (v32) installed. The default download is for the 32bit Areca. I too found that it installed without error but when I tried to launch it nothing happened.

I uninstalled then installed the 64 bit version and it's working fine.

I suggest having some browser detection suggest the 64 bit version where appropriate or at least have that as a second "suggested version".

As to Jonathan's problem of not having Java already loaded, I suggest the installer check for the presence of a compatible Java runtime and notify the user if one isn't present. Similarly, if possible, the app should notify the user if a compatible runtime isn't available rather than exiting silently. The majority of users are not technical types.

My first impression, a big, blank and unfriendly screen. A wizard or at least automatic opening of the Tutorial would be a good thing.
