I'd have to agree with you on ORM's being overkill. You can access both a Zope DA instance and ZSQL methods from Product code via the context pretty much as you would do from a PythonScript. For more information on integrating with Archetypes - although I would highly recommend moving to formlib - Martin Aspeli's book has a whole chapter devoted to integrating an RDBMS.
