So it is best to use >the native applications first. This seems to be at least part of the problem. After setting the input using alsamixer, I was able to record sound with both arecord and rec. Also alsamixer always shows "line" as the active channel, as indicated by "CAPTURE" in red above the level indicator, possibly in addition to whatever other channel I select. And I still can't get audacity (a rather nice sound editor I'm using) to record anything. But this is very likely audacity's problem. BTW: Is there any documentation about what is the meaning of each of the very large number of channels that alsamixer displays? In particular what are "EMU10K1 PCM", "EMU10K1 PCM 0".."EMU10K1 PCM 31", and the various "EMU10K1 PCM Send" and "EMU10K1 PCM Send Routing" channels? And what does "pcm" stand for?
