Standard numbers for sound services.
0 - mixer
1 - sequencer
3 - dsp
8 - sequencer2
12 - adsp

as taken from sound_core.c in the kernel source tree.

It sounds like you have a problem with your xmms configuration. How did you 
configure your xmms? What card does it use for output? Maybe you need to 
modprobe the other one, so that you get enough cards loaded? What happens if 
you temporarily rename your ~/.xmms directory?
