Because a lot of machines now don't actually have an audio cable hooked up between the drive and the sound card (check this on yours). Try using cdda2wav or (preferably) cdparanoia to rip audio from the drive and pipe the output through aplay: e.g. cdparanoia -w 1 - | aplay - This should give you sound.
