I don't know if you're using DevFS or not.. if so, take a look at the permissions on the devices in the /dev/sound directory. you'll see that initially, they're only readable by root. You may need to do a chmod a+w on every device in that directory, to have a user be able to write to dsp, midi, etc. etc. in it, so they can write to the output device. that way, the user gets to write to it, and basically, get your sound.
