Hi all, I wish you all also a Happy New Year. I have forgotten to send this also to the developer list, thus you may have seen this before on the user list. However, I have added also some suggestions even more targeted at developers of Alpha. Yes, indeed it would be great to work towards a new official release of AlphaX. However, I get the impression, Bernard needs some more help. Everyone who stumbles over bugs should make an effort to come up with fixes as much as possible. And then we may need also to set priorities carefully. Something we havn't done in the past as rigorously as it might have been necessary. Nice to have should be clearly separated from critical. No new features should be added and some algorithms that don't work rather be left out, if nobody has the time to fix it. I believe the power of AlphaX is also its biggest enemy. What might be a way forward is that particular persons take some responsibility to look in some of the most important modes and make sure the Tcl scripts for those modes are fit to go into a final release. IMHO there are too many modes in AlphaX and we would need an army of people to accomplish this all. Therefore I suggest to focus on a minimal set of modes, e.g. the ones shown by default to choose from: AppleScript Bernard Desgraupes BibTeX perhaps one could drop this mode from this minimum set, Craig Barton Upright? C ? C++ ? CSS ?, Johan Linde? Fortran95 ?, Craig Barton Upright? HTML Johan Linde? (last update 2003?, important) JavaScript ?, Johan Linde? make ?, perhaps drop this mode from this minimum set, since the makeMenu is not much more than merely a plan, sorry Vince Manual ? MATLAB ?, Stephen M. Merkowitz? Perl ?, Tom Pollard? (last update 2005) PHP ? Bernard Desgraupes PostScript perhaps one could drop this mode from this minimum set Python ? S+/R Andreas (all done, this mode is fit to go into an official release) Shell Scripts ?, Craig Barton Upright? Tcl ? (very important and needs clearly a new maintainer) TeX Joachim Kock?, Frédéric Boulanger? (very, very important) Text ? xml ? Bernard Desgraupes Question marks means, what to do about it? Still highest priority, who could look into this? BTW I have been looking after M2 and S+/R Mode and believe they are fit for a final release. Perhaps above list needs improvements. A discussion on what should be in above list and what not might be quite useful. Then there are also other packages and menus that might need looking into in a similar way by thinking about priorities and if something is of a hight priority, then we need to find someone making an effort to prepare that package for a final release. And then, should we be able to agree on priorities and find the needed maintainers, I believe it would be very helpful if Bernard, who has AFAIK currently the best overview, would enable those maintainers to efficiently get those packages, modes, menus uptodate quickly. Bernard has made some important changes and integrated AlphaX nicely into OS X, e.g. how menus are built, shortcuts are assigned etc. However, I am uncertain to which extent that is well understood by the community and what the most important issues are one should look into as a maintainer. At least I am one of those who feels uncertain. AFAIK Bernard has also setup very nice web sites on all these improvements. But what I am asking for is some checklist of shortlisted issues, every maintainer should look into when attempting to make a package fit for the final release. If that is not too much trouble perhaps Bernard could populate such a checklist also with the relevant URLs where one can find all needed details how to do it. Or perhaps Bernard could point out some modes which are built according to this new philosophy. Bernard helped me to get the S+/R mode quite fit, but I am not sure whether that mode is really good enough to even serve as a model for others. There might be other packages suited better to serve as a model. Just some thoughts coming from Niklaus Wirth school of thinking, sorry guys ;-) Regards, Andreas ETH Zurich Prof. Dr. Andreas Fischlin Systems Ecology - Institute of Integrative Biology CHN E 21.1 Universitaetstrasse 16 8092 Zurich SWITZERLAND and...@en...<mailto:and...@en...> www.sysecol.ethz.ch<http://www.sysecol.ethz.ch/> +41 44 633-6090 phone +41 44 633-1136 fax +41 79 221-4657 mobile Make it as simple as possible, but distrust it! ________________________________________________________________________ On 02/Jan/2011, at 03:51 , Martin Wilhelm Leidig wrote: Hi *, a happy and healthy new year to all of you! If one could get some convergence on what modes, packages, menus to focus on and if maintainers could be found to make an effort, it might be useful if Bernard could enable those helpers. I guess he has at the moment the best knowledge of what needs to be looked at with highest priorities. Bernard has done some very nice changes in the workings of AlphaX integrating it into OS X more than ever before. However, that requires in my experience some attention and modes need to be adapted, e.g. how they build a menu, how they populate the menu, keyboard shortcuts etc. Perhaps, Bernard, is this something you could do?
