At the moment, Allegro only supports truecolor resolutions via the VESA driver: none of the register level hardware drivers can do this. I'm planning to start working on direct support for different color depths as soon as 3.0 is released, but that isn't going to happen within the next few weeks. I think you are getting confused about what each of these patches is supposed to fix :-) The ATI driver patch should make the GFX_MACH64 driver work in the normal 256 color SVGA resolutions.
