Anyway, thanks for the replies (male and female) to you both.

I'd say a 2500 line prog is verging on the complex and i managed to get by
there
sans debugger but i expect my idea and yours of complex differ a tad.
BTW check out my code if you're bored - the program a real Nutcracker if i

so meself.

Once you write complex programs, it could take years to find your bug with
the trial and error approach.

In the programs you´ve wrote so far, your sources of potencial problems are
well known and not so many, so you go by trial and error (I am assuming
that by what you´ve said and by what I see you write in this list).

But that approach is simply impossible to use on complex programs.
