recently, I've been using liferea and they implement this wish almost perfectly.

in liferea: try for example looking at erowid review feed (http://www.erowid.org/library/review/wp-rss2.php) and see how it shows comments, or for some planetkde feeds only "comments: 3" with link, or "no comments available" for feeds that don't support it.
