[ADodb-general] Using adodb-pager with Smarty

I have the example running but the table that is getting displayed is at the
top of my page and not where I put the Smarty tag (which is embedded in a
DIV tag).
 
$sql = "SELECT surname, first_name, msf810.employee_id AS userid,
rtrim(msf810.email_address)    AS email, msf020.global_profile AS profile,
msf878.position_id AS position
    FROM msf810, msf020, msf829, msf878
    WHERE msf810.employee_id = msf020.employee_id
    AND msf810.employee_id = msf829.employee_id
    AND msf810.employee_id = msf878.employee_id
    ORDER BY surname";
 
$data = new ADODB_Pager($db,$sql);
$data->Render($row_per_page=5);
$data->assign('data', $data);
 
In my template page I have:
 
<div id="content">
{$data}
</div>
 
The word "Object" shows up where the Smarty tag (and the data should
display)
