Another one is | /etc/modules.conf (to have a module entry from network device to | module!); then run update-modules. Right, I'm going to take you up on this, but I need one FINAL thing sorting out for me, then I'll make a decent HOWTO, just like it should be. This thing, it's annoying, and I'll explain what I've done so far (this may help others too) First, I copied the driver (acx100_pci.o) to /lib/modules/[kernel]/kernel/drivers/net then I ran insmod acx100_pci.o Oh dear, no workies! It wants 2.4.21-0.21mdk or something... And me no have! So I run fixscript (it's on acx100.sourceforge.net somewhere) as follows: fixscript acx100_pci.o acx100_pci.o (yes, that's right, twice, so it's overwritten) insmod acx100_pci.o Now that the module has been installed, I altered /etc/network/interfaces and typed: auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet dhcp [In the HOWTO, I'll suggest a method for other distros] then I put some stuff in /etc/modules.conf alias wlan0 acx100_pci then I ran update-modules. All good so far! Next, I run iwconfig (I'd previous installed wireless_tools_25) and see there are three interfaces: lo (no wireless extensions) DUH! eth0 (no wireless extension) This is my local network card, a tulip based one I might add... eth1 (no wireless extension) I have no idea what this is, but it wasn't there before, so I'm guessing it's the wireless card. I run ifconfig: ifconfig eth1 up Message about 10-15 lines long, ending in segmentation fault. I've tried > log.txt but nothing happens... WORSE! I now take down my eth0 (for some reason, in windows, the two network cards don't work together...) in case the problem was my fault. Eek! ifconfig eth0 down brings about a hang! The console crashes, and I can't CTRL-C or anything! All I can do is ALT-CTRL-F2 and start another virtual terminal. Yes, that's right, the system has NOT hung, but it's still screwed - ifconfig is screwed and I'm stuck... Any help, please get back to me and I'll write this HOWTO thingy... Thank you! SYSTEM DETAILS: (in case it happens to be useful) Athlon 1.2Ghz, 256Mb RAM, running WinXP and Debian 3.0 upgraded to 3.0r1. There is no X-interface but there will be when I next get the wireless card running so I can install it! NIC's: D-Link Network card (Tulip based) with 100Mbps capabilities. D-Link 520+ wireless card. This is NOT a PCMCIA thingy, apparently it's MINIPCI in a PCI box... Who knows... Who cares? Well, we do evidently! Hope you can help! Thanks! .waffle |
