I also had this problem with 2.4.18 plus apci-20020611, but then I
found that "cat >/dev/null state; echo 0 > state" works.

It seems that a read from "state" is needed after a write before any
subsequent writes are recognized.

BTW, also on my machine (Gericom 1st Supersonic M6-T) all trip points
except "critical (S5)" are gone in 2.4.18+apci20020611, without any
related ACPI error messages during the boot process.
