The proper thing to do would is something like this:

$ mkdir linux-2.4.16
$ ln -sf linux-2.4.16 linux
$ tar xfz linux-2.4.16.tar.gz
$ cd linux
$ zcat ../acpi-$date.diff.gz | patch -p1

Maybe this could be added to the download page? Or the sourceforge site?
