Hi, ed2k-gtk-gui 0.6.3 has just been released. This is a hotfix release for the new 1.0.x cores, of which proper packages are available now as well (there has been a numbering change in the core package versioning). The binaries are now called /usr/bin/overnetclc and /usr/bin/edonkeyclc. ed2k-gtk-gui 0.6.3 _requires_ a 1.0.x core (at least if you use it locally). It should work with older v5x cores as well, but don't complain if it doesn't. GUI and core Packages and GUI source code can be found at the usual location: http://ed2k-gtk-gui.sourceforge.net A short overview of the changes can be found here: http://ed2k-gtk-gui.sourceforge.net/files/ChangeLog-short Most notably, starting and connecting to a locally running core should be dead easy now and not require any weird configuration of the core etc. any more. Installation of the core should be dead easy as well now given that there are ready-made RPM and .deb packages for most i386/Linux flavours. Enjoy and a great weekend to everyone Cheers -Tim |

Hi everyone, Brand-new and improved, here is ed2k-gtk-gui 0.6.2. This is basically a bug-fix release. Download from: http://ed2k-gtk-gui.sf.net/download.shtml Changelog summary: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ v0.6.2 - The 'All your cores are belong to us' release ------------------------------------------------------------------------ * Fixed toolbar in non-green mode with themes that have a radiant background in the toolbar (no more artifacts around the labels and the '?' button) (sorry it took so long until it got fixed) * 'transfered' value is shown again as in previous versions, ie. the (often inflated) value by the core is displayed, and only if 'transfered' is greater than the filesize we calculate a better value from the gaplist. * remember (again) which columns in the download view are supposed to be hidden and which are supposed to be shown. * Fixed erratic GUI freeze on selecting 'shutdown core' * Fixed crash that would happen in certain rare conditions while sorting the download list * Fixed problem with insensitive Go! button in connect dialog when core is on remote host (hopefully; #853664) * Wait a couple of seconds after auto-spawning the core, to give the core opportunity to get going. Otherwise auto-connect on startup would fail after auto-spawning the core (thanks to MrMario64 for pointing this out). * added --noob-wants-to-run-as-root command line switch for those noobs who insist they must absolutely run the GUI as root *sigh*. Must be first command line switch if multiple ones are used. * added --enable-static-gnet2 switch to ./configure, mainly to be able to build packages that are statically linked with gnet2. However, if no gnet2 headers are found, the shipped gnet2 will automatically be used instead now. * for MacOSX: poll-emulator (no need for libpoll - it's just one source file) Use with ./configure --enable-static-poll to force it (otherwise it will automatically be enabled if no poll.h include files are found) * ed2k-link handler now allows you to add downloads in paused state * fixed 'status window clear interval' and 'server rotate interval' (amount configured was taken to be in seconds and not in minutes as it should be) (#866410, #859741) * new icon theme: bluecore (submitted by Anonymous) * mingw and win32 patches by Hazeman * misc. other minor fixes Enjoy! Cheers -Tim |

Hi, ed2k-gtk-gui v0.6.1 has been released. It should work fine with core v51.2. Get it from: http://ed2k-gtk-gui.sourceforge.net/ There are not many changes at the surface, but the code has been restructured quite a bit under the hub. The main reason for this release was the new core, and more precisely the fact that the new core takes different command line arguments then before to make it listen to a GUI controller ('-g' and '-l' now, as opposed to '-' and '!' for core versions up to 0.50.1). Known issues: * the GUI might sometimes freeze for up to a couple of minutes after you select 'shutdown core' from the logo pop-up menu, or alternatively it might not pop up the Connect dialog as it should (in which case you have to select 'disconnect from core' yourself). * download view columns that have been hidden might show up again when restarting the GUI. * (a follow-up release that fixes these issues is planned for the not-so-distant future). On the plus side, we have a wider variety of packages this time, including some that have systray icon support enabled by default. Also, this version should work fine on *BSD again. Major changes and new features: * Supports core v51.2 (spawning core and detecting running core) * New download view code (less CPU intensive) * Better 'time left' estimation (based on speed averages) * Double-clicking on systray icon shows/hides GUI now * New GuiCoreConnection code (fixes a problem with status updates, and generally makes the code a lot more modular). * Translation updates: Italian, German, Dutch, Spanish, Polish (ernieball, cknoerle, joostc, ricesvinto, utak3r) * GUI tries to set the file descriptor limit to the highest value allowed just before spawning the core. * Documentation (handbook) updates * Works around broken KDE system tray panel bug where the GUI tray icon would just disappear under certain circumstances. * --disable-systray switch for configure (is disabled automatically on MacOSX and on systems with old Gtk versions now) * Fallback routine for detecting a running core that does not use the proc file system, but parses 'ps' output (should work on FreeBSD and other systems). * Fixes pipe problem on *BSD (GUI should work there again now). * when using a remote core, the GUI will be able to preview downloads if the temp directory is mounted on the computer where the GUI runs (the ~/.ed2k_gui/options file needs to be edited directly to enable this - see the last two options there). * Compiles under mingw32 (does not work yet on win32 though due to some weird gnet issues on win32) * Various miscellaneous fixes and minor improvements Enjoy! Cheers -Tim |

Hey, A new overnet and edonkey2000 core v51.2 has been released. It seems to work fine so far, and fixes the problems with v51. The command line arguments that you need to pass to this version (and all future versions) have changed. Now you need to pass: -g to make the core listen for a GUI, and -l (=loop) to make the core not accept input from the command line. (It used to be '-' and '!'). This means unfortunately that ed2k-gtk-gui v0.6.0 will not be able to detect running v51.2 cores, and won't be able to spawn v51.2 cores correctly. These issues are being fixed in cvs - expect a v0.6.1 release of the GUI soon. Meanwhile, you have two options: (1) keep using v50.1 and ed2k-gtk-gui 0.6.0 until v0.6.1 comes out. (2) start the v51.2 core manually with: ./overnet0.51.2 - ! -g -l (The first two arguments will be ignored by the core, but they will make sure that the GUI is able to detect the running core). As always, please use the 'screen' utility to put the core into the background, not '&'. Cheers -Tim |

Hi, this is just to let you know that there is (finally) now a new core v0.49.5 for both GNU/Linux(x86) and MacOSX. This core will NOT work any longer with the ed2k-gtk-gui v0.5.0, because the format of the download status message has changed. This core WILL work with a recent CVS version of ed2k-gtk-gui though. v0.49.5 is a bug-fix release. It FIXES mainly: * the '/' vs. '\' issue in filepaths that resulted in (a) downloads not completing and always corrupt. (b) "could not write/create x.part.met" errors. * file availability in percent calculation * progress bar is re-implemented for GUI (the progress bar still has some issues though). Once you switch to v49.x, you cannot take your temp files back to v48 or ealier. The temp file format and configuration file format (pref.met, known.met) has changed in v49.x. IF you ever intend to go back to v48 or ealier, make sure you delete all your .met configuration files as well (or put the two core versions in different folders). So far so good. I'm planning to do a 0.6.0 release of the GUI next week, btw. Enjoy! Cheers -Tim |

Hi, as it happens, there is a v0.49 for linux on the overnet/edonkey download pages. I just tried it, and I also tried the current core version from CVS. However, it seems to me that there is a lot of stuff that needs to be fixed before v0.49 is usable with the GUI. Currently I get no progress bars, no x.part filenames for the v48-style temp file system files (note: v49 introduces a new temp file system again, which is v48 style but with a separate directory for each download). Also, it just doesn't seem to start downloading anything, even with highly popular files which would start downloading within seconds in v48 :-( Therefore I strongly recommend that you stay away from v49 cores for the time being, until these problems are addressed. If you want to try it anyway, please try it with a 'clean install' with different temp and incoming directories, so you don't mess with your old temp files). *sigh* Cheers -Tim |

In future, please use ed2k-gtk-gui-users or ed2k-gtk-gui-devel instead :-) But as you are probably not the only one interested in this question, I thought it might be a good thing to give a small update on things. > how is the development of the GUI and EDonkey itself? > is the GUI still being developped? ed2k-gtk-gui is still in active development, as the ChangeLog at http://ed2k-gtk-gui.sourceforge.net/txt/ChangeLog proves. In fact, the current CVS version (which will be the upcoming 0.5.0 version) totally rules :-) There are two reasons why I haven't put out a new version yet: * there is a bug with some widget styles if the green theme is used, which causes these labels (toolbar, notebook tabs labels etc.) to use another font than they should. I haven't figured out the problem yet, nor have I figured out how to reproduce it on my own machine. This is a rather annoying visual bug (as the font size is apparently huge on some systems), so I really want this fixed before I make a new release. * I am currently in the final stage of writing up my MSc dissertation which is due pretty soon, so I currently have not too much time to tinker with the GUI. > Is it also going to support overnet? yes, it will fully support overnet at some point. Currently the problem lies in the current version of the overnet core, which will definitively crash when the GUI sends a search request. The CVS version of the GUI should already be able to recognise an overnet core and possibly even work around the search bug (I don't know what code overnet 42 is based on, so I am not sure that some of my overnet core fixes have already been worked in). It's a matter of time. The next overnet core version should at least be usable with the GUI. Anyway, development on this is done on both sides (GUI and core). > On the site, further development of EDonkey is announced, is this happening > now? yes. I know I've been saying that for probably over half a year now, but there is definitely progress now. The donkey code reached a state where it is stable again, and is also being actively worked on again by MetaMachine. It is definitively in a state where we might see a new linux core any time :-) Cheers -Tim -- http://ed2k-gtk-gui.sourceforge.net/ http://ed2k-tools.sourceforge.net/ |

Just a question... how is the development of the GUI and EDonkey itself? On the site, further development of EDonkey is announced, is this happeni= ng=20 now? And is the GUI still being developped? Is it also going to support overnet? Laters, Jeroen |

Hi, (1) Translations First of all, I would like to announce that the current GUI version in CVS is ready for translation into other languages :-) Currently there are no translations yet, but if you would like to translate the GUI into your language, please feel free to contact me. It's dead easy - the only thing you need to know is how to use a text editor, that's all. Also, a translation can be done in multiple steps, it doesn't need to be done all at once. (A French translation is already under way.) (2) New core v59-4 Secondly, I just wanted to let everyone know that I've put out a core v59-4. It is basically just v59-3 + coloured progress bar functionality. No other changes. http://ed2k-gtk-gui.sf.net/core.html I shall warn you though: This version will apparently not work properly with the JavaGUI (the JavaGUI might not show all the downloads). [1] It should work without problems with the ed2k-gtk-gui though. (3) Ready-made GUI binaries I've been asked for ready-made binaries of the GUI. They are under way, but it might take a while. I have to learn packaging... The current source code tarball, however, contains a dynamically linked binary for x86 GNU/linux systems though IIRC. (4) preview function in CVS The current CVS version also has a 'preview' function in the downlods pop-up menu now, just in case anyone would like to test it. :-) Cheers -Tim [1] because this core supplies the x.part filename information of each download in a format not expected by the current JavaGUI version. (This is not intentional, btw, I've just heard of the problem, and now I remember why I didn't publish 59-4 earlier. I will fix this with a new version when I have time.). |

Hi everyone, Version 0.3.0 of the ed2k_gui has just been released on sourceforge as source tarball [*]. http://sourceforge.net/projects/ed2k-gtk-gui/ Download it and do the usual tar xzf ed2k_gui-0.3.0.tar.gz cd ed2k_gui-0.3.0/ ./configure make ... become root ... make install The binary is then called 'ed2k_gui'. Please do read the INSTALL file - it will tell you what you need in order to compile the GUI (e.g the gnet library which you can get from http://www.gnetlibrary.org). If ./configure fails because of some weird error (ie. something else than a missing library), try running autoconf and automake. Check whether you have different autoconf versions installed and use autoconf version 2.5x if you have it (which is called 'autoconf2.50' on my debian testing system). Please report problems and submit comments to the ed2...@li... mailing list (you do _not_ need to subscribe in order to post messages there). Hope it works for all of you :-) Happy downloading -Tim [*] it might take up to 30 minutes until the file is downloadable. If it doesn't work, please try again later. |

Stop." Marc Thoben reported similar problems on the -user list. Apparently you have to use autoconf version 2.5x (not 2.13) to create a new configure file, then everything should work. You have to check which version your autoconf is. Possibly you have both versions of autoconf installed, but 'autoconf' is linked to autoconf2.13. Cheers -Tim |

hi all, as tim knows, i've been thinking for some time about a gtk2 port of the ed2k gui. it shouldn't be that hard, and we could benefit from a lot of things, like antialiased fonts, icons in PNG format with alpha channel effects, powerful lists and some more stuff... the port would be easy but not absolutely trivial, i have tried simply compiling it without GTK_DISABLE_DEPRECATED defined and after changing a couple of things (mostly removing the GtkText and GtkCLists and using GtkTextView and GtkTreeView) it dies miserably with a segmentation fault deep inside gtk_init(). so i guess we should rather create a new interface using glade-2 and progresively add the gui code in it... what do you say tim, perhaps we could create a cvs branch for the gtk2 port? apart from that, tim, i haven't been able to find credit for tigert and jimmac (authors of the icons contained in the gnome2 icon theme) in the gui source, i think they deserve mention for their killer artwork. im probably stupid and couldnt find the right doc... ;) cheers all, axel |

Hi everyone, thanks for waiting. I'm happy to announce that the GUI sourcecode has just been checked into the sourceforge CVS repository. Please refer to the project's home page http://ed2k-gtk-gui.sourceforge.net/ for details on how to retrieve the source code via CVS. Happy hacking! :-) Cheers -Tim |
