duply create profile creates a conf script where purge-full and purge-incr appear in the comments. Just search for purge-full and purge-incr in the duply script

I meant that the entire sequence pre_backup_post is not an atom: It is possible that other duplicity instances do things concurrently while this sequence is running. And I think this should be mentioned somewhere.
Your proposal does not set CMD_VALUE anymore. But it is needed further down.
