Looks like changing from the Nouveau driver to a Nvidia driver fixes this.

OK, the LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 setting does not matter. If I open a terminal and just type beebeep and enter it usually gets that error. But if I keep doing it after about 3 or 4 times beebepp comes up and runs just fine.

Unfortunately since it does not start up there is no log. . . Then I actually got it to run by doing: LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1; beebeep. But I had to try it several times. I tested it and it works. Sent and received beeps. While it was running I got the log file.
I see I used the deb package to install 5.8.6 originally
