Considering that the studio went the extra mile to release a double version but did NOT release lossless, I'd agree that maybe the lossless feature was never readied for the latest players. Too bad. I'm still surprised they released two versions - is the different so bad?

Gunter, Apparently Disclosure day is being released in both "standard" and "discrete" DTS. Do you know what that means? Is the "discrete" the lossless "coherent acoustic" DTS format which only works on XD10/20?

Cinema DTS players output all the channels at the same level. That is called "A-Chain". You are referring to "B-Chain", where eventually the SPL in the auditorium requires the surrounds to be -3dB relative to the front channels. That is a legacy from old analogue sound processors, when Digital was not a thing. In that case, your MONO surround was the summation of the LEFT and RIGHT surrounds. So by aiming to 82dBC for each surround, you'd end up to 85dBC when playing together, the SAME LEVEL of stage...

I did read the thread but my understanding is that it's something that needs to be done at mixing level - as you say, DTS was not the only format available and not dealing with that issue themselves seems wrong to me. Those suggestions mentioned in the thread should be applied by the encoding process IMHO. Otherwise you risk to have tracks with a wild amount of LFs for a number of reasons. Thanks @Gunter I'm surprised the user from France claims he spoke with a DTS engineer and they told them that LF on surrounds ends up +10dB in the auditorium but that "usually nobody notices"! It doesn't sound right to me (pun intended), particularly because 1990's surround weren't capable of playing below 80Hz so it would be simple for someone to mix LF content without realising - which would then be blasted through the main LFE in DTS format. I feel that either those frequencies were removed OR...

I agree that a +6dB adjustment on the LFE channel is needed for 5-track AUD files :)

@Gunter To be honest, no, I cannot be sure. It was done in a different cinema in the chain I used to work. Was it "Big Fish" from Sony? That would match the 8ch track. I kind of remember the tech manager there saying it was a lossless test but it was 2003 which is now a whopping 23 years ago! :) The DS5 I have on my desk, does say 31.5Hz for the LFE, they must have amended that! (BTW, do you happen to have a working copy of the DS5? My original CD just degraded over time and doesn't read anymore)...

Thanks Maxim, To be fair, I've only played a "Coherent acoustics" disk once - I think it was an 8 track lossless disk. It was a test. Which never happened again. Never seen a 6-track disk in my life. With that I just mean to say that they're not as common. I think the main gotcha was that those could only be played by an XD-10/20 and (6 track) by a DTS 6D-SV (with an extra aptx100 chip) and the industry really didn't want a dual inventory of media. Gunter seems to suggest that the 8ch media is ok...
