since writing this i went into vlc player help and have resoved everything with that; now i just wish to express my appreciation for the gift that you people have provided. Remarkable.

a typical tv show will start up and play maybe 5 minutes and then freeze; mouse pointer and all. a hard boot is necessary to unlock. i ran windows media center for years on the same computer with no problems. transferring from tivo via kmttg
