so at least for my friend because he is using the usb he should record 16bit, but from what i understand after a quick Google because im using the xlr instead, it bypasses the mics own adc converter for an external one(which in my case is a scarlett 4i4) so then the bit rate is determined by the external adc because now the mic is analogue. so my recording can make use of the 24bits, correct me if wrong. and also from my understanding the bit rate is a what records the difference in volume so the...

I understand what you're saying, but I'm not asking for recording advice i understand 24bit is probably overkill but i have the storage space so it doesn't really matter, and my final output is mp3 anyhow. i was just curious as to why the 2 different recordings had different compression ratios in 7zip, irrespective of mic quality. i had just assumed that for example any 16bit 44.1Khz 1min recording would have the same file size regardless of content(which is does) but then when compressing would...

just to clarify, i never actually said they were recordings of singing which i should have said earlier... My bad. the recordings are for a podcast so just talking vocals not singing, if that helps understand what the figures are saying? also my mic is going through an xlr audio interface and my friends via usb direct from the mic, both mics are audiotechnica ATR2100-USB which can do either xlr or usb, not sure if this info helps either? next time we record i will check both our settings.

just did some testing and found that if i convert both files to 16bit they still have different compression ratios in 7zip but the gap is far smaller eg. 34% - 38% so 4% difference. but even more interesting if i convert them both into 24bit the 7zip compression ratios are both 63%... Go figure!!! and 32bit 88% - 49% seems to be that 32bit really throws things out of whack, must be due to the way floating point/scientific notation numbers are stored.

Even if your friend has a truly amazing vocal ability (opera singer?) he will not be able to vary the sound level by anything like even 16 bits - ie 96 db.
