Constant volume dirty on boot even if drive is not dirty. Windows XP
The ultradefrag.exe is the GUI application. The udefrag.exe is the console (command prompt) application. The rest are support files.
In the settings tab is the option "execute missed tasks" or similar activated? This would allow resumming missed tasks as soon as possible. Stefan
Are you both using Windows 10 with feature update 1809 or are you using different releases? If you disable running in any case and use the SYSTEM account the task will never run, since the user is never logged on. It also depends on things like using tools that might optimize (tweak) your system settings, but in reallity they just hinder Windows to work properly. If possible I would delete and recreate the schduled task. Stefan
With latest releases of Windows 10 and Server 2016 it seems that the System user is no longer a garanty to have full administrative rights, even enabling "run with highest permissions" doesn't change this. It seems that running as "regular" administrative user with highest permissions enabled works as before. You may try that if the scheduled task fails again. Stefan
When Windows is running, many parts of the disk are locked. Use gPartEd to shrink the partition, since it will be able to move all files, bacause Windows is not active and therefore cannot lock any parts on disk. The sizes depend on what you will do with each O/S and what size the physical disk has. May be separate in 50% parts. Stefan
Thanks Stefan, In Linux Mint install there is the option to install alongside the existing OS, so Mint does the partitioning. Or is this what you mean by Windows doing the partitioning? You think manual partitioning with Gparted is better? What size should I make the partition/s?

For best results it is best to do this without using Windows. gPartEd available at this site is doing this from a live USB stick, so Windows will not disturb the process. Stefan
Defragmentation doesn't consolidate free space, this is only done by optimization. In your case the most appropriate would be "Quick Optimization". Stefan
A user asked this in the wrong place, so I am re-posting it here. I am not interested in moving small or large files to the front or end of the disk but need file defragmentation and free space consolidation. Not sure what method to use to achieve this. Cheers.
https://ultradefrag.net/handbook/GUI.html contains the information about the tool bar items to edit the settings file. https://ultradefrag.net/handbook/Console.html the environment variables section duplicates the information given in the setting files comments. Stefan
This file is not mandatory to be able to execute UltraDefrag, it is just a flag file indicating, that the boot time defrag action was run recently and that it is now just time to allow a regular boot without checking. My testing environment includes Windows releases as VirtualBox guests and they run without problems. Can you run UD interactively? regards, Stefan
BTW, are you really attempting to write 100GB per day for the next 54 years to your SSDs? Wouldn't you replace them much earlier?
Since the article is from June 1st, 2016, and therefore about 2 years old, the technic behind SSDs and Windows has significently changed. Windows doesn't do a full optimization it just trims the file system, so there is not much it changes at all. In addition the SSDs controller makes sure to equally use each cluster. It all depends on how big your SSDs are and how often you re-write the entire disk, so for a regular user the 300 TB writes will be reached after he has already replaced the drive with...
UltraDefrag doesn't detect SSDs automatically. In addition just keep the Windows settings enabled, see https://www.howtogeek.com/256859/dont-waste-time-optimizing-your-ssd-windows-knows-what-its-doing/ Hope this helps you to trust Windows.
This problem is mostly related to still using 32-bit applications when there are already 64-bit applications available. In stall the x64 release of Notepad++ and you will not have any problems.
