The best workaround for this is probably to run SMPlayer on XWayland use the --gpu-context=x11 mpv option. Without it, mpv will start on Wayland and therefore it will be impossible for it to interface with SMPlayer running on XWayland. To actually fix this, Wayland support needs to be implemented in SMPlayer.
