I observe the same issue. When I create a Databar Expanded Stacked barcode (type 81) with the frontend command line tool, no human readable text gets shown in the generated PNG file. But exactly that is a good reason for choosing CMake: CMake supports a lot of platforms and compilers, including GCC (Make), MSVC (VS and NMake), Cygwin and a lot of others, QtCreator can handle CMake projects and - if I got it correctly - Visual Studio also can handle CMake projects.
