Greyscale (or rather "Grayscale" in the options) works. The colour option does show up as "Colour" rather than "Color", if that might be relevant. Is there any other test that I can run?

From "scanimage -L" it looks as if the device name is not changing over reboots. Output file uploaded (hopefully).

Strange about the version being old, I thought that was under control. ppa added, updated and upgraded, confirm that the same problem is seen with v2.12.1. Using that command line, out.pnm is in colour. (I cannot attach attach the output with an email response - it gets rejected because the message size is too big, about 11MB.) I used the device name as is and it worked. How should I be checking the device name? The output from "lsusb" did not seem to match, so I guess you are looking for something...
