ECM filter
I'm gonna bump this. @Igor Pavlov, someone has kindly already built a plugin that encodes the input file as an ecm file - but this would be much better implemented as a filter. Link to the plugin version: http://ajax16384.narod.ru./
Quote from Shell: I'd like to comment the idea. I assume that the main goal is to use currently available dictionary sizes in low-memory conditions, and not to advance to 2G+ dictionaries. First of all, while swapping is "much slower than using the RAM", swapping a memory-intensive application is terribly slow. I can hardly imagine a scenario (though there may be some) where using a big dictionary is worth several days spent on archiving. Besides, original LZMA is somewhat slow by itself. Now, how...
I would also like this feature added.
Use hdd to simulate more RAM for larger dictionary sizes.
Thank you for your well-reasoned reply Shell! The main goal, actually, IS to allow virtually every computer use of 4GB dictionaries, with a complimentary goal of letting virtually every computer also extract such highly compressed archives. I've created a framework (a while ago, actually) for "streamlining" many aspects of certain sets of files using a variety of tools - with a final compression by 7z included. These tools produce reproducibly unique files to allow for easy transport, validation,...
Hello, thank you for this wonderful program. The following request is made with the full realization that to use the HDD in the way described would be much slower than using the RAM, but it does have a purpose. I would like an option for 7-zip to simulate the windows "swap file" mechanism, but executed by 7z and only for 7z. This would allow someone to use a very large dictionary on relatively little RAM - and also extract those same high dictionary files made by the regular method or this method....
