I saw this post which interests me as a pianist. I have two ideas. I've seen grand/baby grand pianos mic'ed using the cooling holes in the plate. With a good dynamic mic you can get right up in there. There's usually more than one hole to try for balancing frequencies. Haven't tried this but I've always thought that the bench is the best seat in the house when playing a grand or baby grand - maybe a pair of binaural mic/headphones would be effective? Perhaps there's a set that have good noise cancelling...
