You are right. The sprites look good. But the "nc" = "non commercial" aspect of the license is the limitation. It is the same as with the castle images we had to replace. Trigger Rally itself doesn't violate this license but free software can't have the limitation of not being allowed to be sold. (Originally I didn't think this is a problem because the game would work just fine without these assets but of course it isn't complete without vegetation. It could be replaced with other images. But ideally...

If you need to pay for images is not actually the relevant question. You can have freely licensed images you can buy and you can have images you can use without cost but which aren't freely licensed. For Trigger Rally the license is important. Public domain is easiest. But cc-by-sa and GPL (copyleft) would also be ok.

I don't know how many people still use devices that are pre 2006. Even my very dated Lenovo ThinkPad T400s came out in 2008. I can't really comment on the development proposals, but I do agree with what you mentioned about the user interface and menu. I don't feel very strong about the audio since I am not a very audiophile person.
