If it mounts but the filesystem is corrupted, try copying the unencrypted partition to an IMG file with a hex editor, mount that image file and then you'll be able to run your favorite recovery tools to try and fix it or recover as many files on it as you could. From now on, back up the header into a separate file, do not rely on the internal backup. This feature saved me so much grief. Make backups of those backups, upload one to your email account.

Solved https://sourceforge.net/p/veracrypt/discussion/technical/thread/897c7860a2/ Since only way to create threads here is to send an email, I had no way of editing or updating my post. I can't remember if I tried decrypting the system partition, I have a vague recollection of it either not working or being greyed out since my system wasn't encrypted but I'm not certain. Duly noted for the future, though.

Update, I uninstalled Veracrypt, restarted, installed x.24 (I had x.20) and tried again and it worked.

Background: I do monthly backups of my (veracrypted) drive but only now did I have to actually use it and I realized that when this program is backing up the disk, it is doing so while Veracrypt is decrypting it on the fly like it would for any other program used live from the OS. So what really gets backed up is the unencrypted disk. I restored my OS from such backup and as you can guess, the Veracrypt bootloader was still there but of course I didn't have to type a password, just press ESC and...

Veracrypt has truly been revolutionary as well as its ascendant, Truecrypt. My one and only issue has been the inability to use boot-time tools like windows repair, boot-time virus scanners and so on. Decrypting and re-encrypting the whole drive every time is extremely unreasonable and inconvenient. Is there a way to use boot-time tools on a veracrypted system drive?
